It always seems shakey to have electricals in the gastank, but it's actually pretty safe. If the wires are submerged and spark, gas will not ignite, it has to be the proper A/F mixture just like in other parts of a car. If done right, you can put a match out in a puddle of gas w/o igniting it. I imagine odds of getting the proper A/F would only occur right at surface level, and the only place you should have to worry about sparks would be @ the brushes & I'd bet the pump is a brushless design, so no sparks... I haven't blown up a Jeep yet with one yet. But I am armed w/ a fire extinguisher when I start one the first time after pump replacement. ;-)
